Statement of Purpose
I was introduced to the world of programming because of my hobby of making posters. In my leisure time, I loved designing posters and I wanted to sell them. So I taught myself HTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL and built myself a website. I started running the company Beniasohokola, and I remember the feeling when I sold my very first poster. I was able to combine my two interests, and the self fulfillment and elation from creating something of my own was incomparable to anything else.
Following my passion, I enrolled in the Computer Science and Engineering program in BRAC University, one of the highest reputed private universities in the country. While I greatly enjoyed learning new programming techniques, I was more attracted towards the idea of applying my knowledge. Moreover, I also wanted to support myself financially. Therefore I started working from my second year of undergraduate study. Consequently, my grades suffered. But the practical experiences I gained were invaluable. This can be exemplified by the National Hackathon Competition I participated in 2014. Along with my team members of TrillionPixel, we designed a quixotic application to combat corruption, a prevalent problem in Bangladesh. After 36 hours of exhilarating coding, among 300 other teams, our project won the Championship in the Corruption category. We designed an application that could record conversations and instantly upload them on social media, as well as send them to Anti-corruption Committees. A year after that I also participated in BRACathon to develop an android tab based educational app that can be used by school children in the rural areas of Bangladesh. Our idea went on to win the 2nd prize.
Moreover, in my free time, I like to work on freelancing projects as well as developing my own software. I have created Venus, a platform for alumni associations, and Mars, a hotel/hostel management system, both of which have made over 300+ sales on Codecanyon so far. Currently, I am working on another project, Saturn, a hospital management system.
Towards the end of my undergraduate study, I submitted my thesis on a project titled “Controlling Android Device with Eye Tracking”. My team built an application for people with mobility impairment enabling users to operate their cell phones without touching the screens. Since most existing eye tracking devices employ costly hardware, we tried to come up with a more economic solution where no additional hardware would be needed. The app only used the phone’s front camera and a combination of techniques including face, pupil, and cornea detection along with calibration of the data. Not only was this project quite enjoyable for me, but it was also acclaimed by my thesis supervisor, Dr. Md. Haider Ali.
In my second year, I started working at Creative Item . Here I learned the basics of server side scripting language PHP and Codeigniter framework. But more importantly, for the first time I got a taste of working in an IT firm and I was thrilled by the experience. Since then I have worked at several other companies and gained valuable expertise. In 2015 I worked on HIVE. Here I got a better understanding of how startup companies can grow and I learned how to work in a coworking space. After I graduated, I joined Coalesce, an online platform for marketing. Here I gained insight into how technical ideas could be transformed into business projects. All of these experiences have helped reassure my ardent passion for coding while at the same time made me realize my aspiration of creating my own company. In my third year of undergraduate study, I started my own IT company Techynaf, along with three of my friends. While this was a very rewarding experience for me, it led to a very important realization. While I had the technical know-how of programming, I lacked the business acumen needed to sustain a company.
To serve this end, I feel the Telepathic Programming School is the next logical step for me.
While the last few years have witnessed technology taking big strides, Bangladesh is still at its incipient stage in the IT scene. For the future, I have ambitions to set up my own IT firm, alongside which I want to operate a programming school in Sylhet, where I can share my passion for programming with the wizards of the next generation.
